Protocol Cigars has announced the release of its sixth core line addition, dubbed Crime Scene Unit. The new cigar continues the brand’s law enforcement-inspired theme, this time highlighting the work of forensic investigators who handle evidence at crime scenes.
The release is notable for being Protocol’s first cigar wrapped in Connecticut Broadleaf maduro—an ingredient that company co-founder Juan Cancel says has long been out of reach.
“Since day one I wanted to release a cigar with a Connecticut Broadleaf Wrapper but was always told a company our size could never get it,” Cancel said. After years of trying, he credits A.J. Fernández with helping him finally secure the leaf.

In addition to the Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, the Crime Scene Unit features a Mexican San Andrés maduro binder and Nicaraguan Criollo and Corojo fillers from Jalapa and Estelí. It’s produced in a single 6½” x 50 toro extra vitola and comes in boxes of 10. Each cigar carries an MSRP of $18, with boxes priced at $180.
Héctor J. Alfonso Sr., director of factory operations for Espinosa Premium Cigars, described the blend as rich but balanced, offering a profile that’s creamy and chocolatey with a bit of edge.
Only 150 boxes are being released initially—half of the originally planned 300—due to production limitations. Whether additional runs will follow is unclear, and the company is currently labeling it as a limited production release to be sold exclusively through retailer Smoke Inn Cigars.
Boxes are shipping now and are expected to arrive at retail locations by next week.
