La Flor Dominicana Suave Natural Máximo

It’s been about 31 years since La Flor Dominicana debuted in 1994 with its first line, the La Flor Dominicana Premium Line. The line would eventually get renamed to Suave. After those three decades, the company decided to give its foundational line a rework, from the blend to the band.

In early September 2025, the new Suave was released, returning in bright, vibrant red, yellow and gold packaging and with updated blend profiles for its two variations, the Suave Maduro, and this cigar the Suave Natural.

“We sat down and asked ourselves, if we could go back to day one knowing everything we know now, what would this cigar have been? What would it look like? And then we got to work,” said Litto Gomez, co-founder of La Flor Dominicana, in a press release in April.

The Suave Natural’s new blend uses an Ecuadorian corojo-seed wrapper, a Mexican San Andrés binder and fillers from the Dominican Republic; a contrast to the original blend, which used an Ecuadorian Connecticut-seed wrapper over a Dominican binder and filler.

The La Flor Dominicana Suave Natural returns in three round sizes:

  • La Flor Dominicana Suave Natural Maceo (6 x 48) — $8.40 (Box of 20, $168)
  • La Flor Dominicana Suave Natural Máximo (6 x 54) — $11.80 (Box of 20, $236)
  • La Flor Dominicana Suave Natural Gobernador (6 1/4 x 60) — $12.80 (Box of 20, $256)

The La Flor Dominicana Suave Maduro uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper over a binder from Jalapa, Nicaragua and fillers from the Dominican Republic. It’s a departure from the original blend, which used a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper over a Dominican binder and filler.

It’s sold in two box-pressed vitolas:

“It’s bright and bold yet classic, it symbolizes the joie de vivre at the core of LFD,” said Tony Gomez. “I compare it to the smooth joy and elegance of trotting through our farm on a Paso Fino horse while enjoying a beautiful cigar.”

The La Flor Dominicana Suave Natural Máximo is a thick, substantial cigar, almost reminding me of the kind of vitola that a props coordinator would select if asked to find a stereotypical cigar. The red and gold band works well with the tanned color of the wrapper, one of those combinations that I’d love to know whether it was intentional, good luck, or some combination of the two. The wrapper has a little bit of a waxy texture to it, slightly dry, and with some decent veins that rise up off the leaf and provide ridges for my fingers to move over. The first cigar is firm with just a touch of give, the second is a bit firmer, and the third may just be the firmest of the bunch. All three cigars look good, your tolerance for veins notwithstanding, but I don’t see anything that would suggest an issue. The feet of the cigar have aromas of some freshly dug soil and something that reminds me of apple strudel or a similar apple-filled pastry, though that latter sensation varies the most from cigar to cigar. Specifically, it smells freshly made in the first one, store-bought and a bit stale in the third, and in the middle in the second cigar. The cold draw is firmer than I would like on the first and second cigars, while the third is what I wish they had been. The flavor is more pastry dough than filling, with some fairly generic flavors like unsalted pretzels making sporadic appearances. It takes a while, but some pepper emerges, seemingly from the leaf, making contact with my lips as opposed to being a component of the flavor.

The La Flor Dominicana Suave Natural Máximo starts with baked pretzels, black pepper, dehydrated mashed potatoes, and damp pretzels, a somewhat surprisingly full flavor and body, though neither overwhelms. Creaminess begins to emerge, with the body of the smoke getting fuller and the flavor getting more lush with each puff, an early development in the progression of the cigar that pays immediate dividends. The one-inch mark has a smoky creaminess, a flavor that I really, really enjoy and which becomes the hallmark of this first third. The smoky, creamy flavor carries through much of this section, though a little further up, I get a flavor that I would call either a sweet pretzel or a glazed almond, depending on the puff. For my palate, it’s a fantastic first third that has my senses excited to see what the rest of the cigar holds. Flavor is medium, body is medium-full and strength is mild. Construction is flawless thus far with no issues.

If there’s one change that the second third of the La Flor Dominicana Suave Natural Máximo brings about, it is a bit more of the smoky, peppery flavor, though it still feels in balance with the creaminess. There’s a spot right around the midpoint where the flavor gets noticeably smokier, almost as if what had been an accent is ready to take the leading role. It’s somewhat like a freshly lit campfire from a bit of a distance, and in a couple of puffs I can taste some firewood, but the dominant sensation is those first aromas off a new campfire. Amidst all that, I still find touches of sweetness, mainly creaminess but also a touch of a glazed donut. Retrohales add some more pepper, putting it front and center as opposed to that component being part of a combination offered by the flavor. A surge of creaminess closes out this section, making the cigar rich and lush, while the campfire comes in via the finish and on whatever my nose picks up from the exhaled smoke. Flavor is medium with a few flirtations up the scale, body is medium-full and strength continues to be mild. The burn line gets a little bit askew in the first cigar, but I don’t have any other issues with the construction or combustion.

Changes to the flavor of the La Flor Dominicana Suave Natural Máximo have generally been minor, save for a pronounced change in each section; in the final third, a subtle addition of more dry wood starts off the section. In the second cigar, the pepper gets just slightly irritating to my eyes, something I didn’t experience in the first or third cigars, though from everything I can tell, the experiences are otherwise nearly identical. There is a touch of char building in the flavor, sort of a natural extension of the campfire sensation from the second third. It’s probably the most pronounced change in the final third, as this section doesn’t quite make that big step that the other two did. Somewhat surprisingly, the final inches dial back just a touch, and I get a warm muffin sensation before a spent fire pit takes over, complete with char and pepper. The flavor is just full enough that I find myself wanting—or needing—to space out my puffs just a touch so as not to overwhelm my palate. I’d call it medium-full, while body is medium-plus and strength is still mild. Construction is very good and I have no issues smoking any of the three cigars.

Final Notes

  • The strength and durability of the ash was quite impressive on all three cigars. I’m not one to push the limits of ash, but each cigar’s initial ash reached a point where I became curious about how far I could take it.
  • The new packaging of the Suave lines is a pretty notable departure of what could be described as largely plain, black wood boxes that had the usual markings of a logo and the name of the cigar, but not much in terms of design beyond that.
  • That said, there is something I really like about a simple box that offers simple, consistent, and easy-to-identify branding, especially when thinking about it in the context of a retail humidor.
  • I haven’t had the chance to smoke the new Suave Maduro, but I’m certainly interested in doing so based on the experience I had  with the Suave Natural.
  • Brooks Whittington reviewed the Suave Grand Maduro No. 6 in early October.
  • Likewise, I haven’t tried the other two vitolas, and I’m intrigued given how much difference there is between their ring gauges.
  • If you were wondering, Suave is the Spanish word for smooth.
  • I didn’t get any nicotine strength from the La Flor Dominicana Suave Natural Máximo. For a company known for its full-bodied, full-strength cigars, this sits on the other end of the spectrum.
  • That said, there is still plenty of flavor, showing that a full-flavored cigar can be made without needing to also deliver a gut punch.
  • The cigars for this review were purchased by halfwheel.

  • The company lists these as a 6 x 54 toro. The numbers above are the measurements we found for the three cigars used for this review.
  • Final smoking time was two hours on 45 minutes on average.

Overall Score

It has been some time since I last smoked the original Suave blend, but I do remember it being an enjoyable, mild cigar. This new version is still mild in terms of strength but packs a ton of rich, incredibly enjoyable flavor. The profile starts mild and creamy before finishing more robust, with a thread of campfire smokiness and some mild black pepper that emerges to tie the sections of the cigar together. Construction was also fantastic, with no issues detracting from the smoking experience. The La Flor Dominicana Suave Natural Máximo is simply a fantastic cigar that I look forward to smoking again.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and the G-League’s Valley Suns. I was previously the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League, and Goodyear Ballpark, spring training home of the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Guardians. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I’m a voiceover artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
