Knuckle Sandwich Puro Nicaragua Robusto Review

The Knuckle Sandwich brand has quickly grown from a high-profile collaboration into a full-fledged extension of the Espinosa portfolio. What began as a project tied to Guy Fieri’s personality has evolved into a series of regular-production and limited releases that consistently highlight Espinosa’s blending preferences. The line has expanded steadily, moving beyond its initial novelty and establishing itself as a legitimate, recurring presence on retailer shelves.

The Knuckle Sandwich Puro Nicaragua was first announced in April of this year, marking a noteworthy shift within the brand. By committing fully to Nicaraguan tobacco from wrapper to filler, Espinosa uses this release to dig deeper into the core of what defines their style. It’s a straightforward concept: showcase Nicaraguan leaf without distraction, leaning into its natural intensity and structure. While the earlier Knuckle Sandwich blends carried brighter banding and a more energetic presentation, the Puro offers a slightly more restrained look and a blend aimed at emphasizing tobacco character over concept.

As with many cigars produced at A.J. Fernández’s San Lotano factory, the construction and tobacco selection point toward strength, spice, and density. The approach is familiar but focused, giving hobbyists a clear view of how the KS profile translates when built entirely on Nicaraguan soil.

Appearance

The Knuckle Sandwich Puro Nicaragua stands out with its dark, earthy wrapper—deep chocolate brown with a muted espresso sheen under direct light. The surface shows light grit and scattered veins, giving the cigar a rugged, natural look. Construction feels firm and evenly packed, with no noticeable soft spots.

The band is bold but slightly more restrained than previous KS releases—black, red, and metallic accents complement the deep wrapper without overshadowing it. Aromas from the leaf offer barnyard, mineral-rich soil, cocoa nib, and faint red pepper warmth. The foot contributes a mix of sweet raisin, cedar, and tangy spice.

Smoking Experience

A clean straight cut reveals an excellent cold draw with just the right amount of resistance. Delicate notes of sweet hay and cocoa dust are almost imperceptible, with dominant notes of dry cedar and dusty earth coming through first, along with a subtle pepper tingle on the lips. The opening draws erupt with signature Nicaraguan power, immediately hitting the palate with dense waves of black pepper, charred cedar, volcanic earth, and a light, rich leather. There’s a fullness that’s assertive and bold. Smoke production is substantial, coating my inner cheeks and tongue. Beneath the initial blast of spice there is a roasted almond note that presents itself, but not in enough of a way that balances the attack.

Within the first inch, the flavors begin to settle. Pepper remains dominant, but the supporting cast becomes clearer. Slight sweetness comes through—caramelized sugar and cocoa butter—but it stays subtle, never dominating the blend. The retrohale reveals a focused mix of roasted coffee, black pepper heat, and a faint mineral edge, adding intensity. The draw remains excellent and the ash stacks in firm, segmented layers. Flavor sits at full, strength is medium-plus, and body registers medium/full.

As I smoke into the middle portion of the cigar, the profile becomes more layered. The darker flavors evolve—charred oak transforms into smoky cedar, and the leather mixes with the sweeter notes in a bittersweet balance. A cinnamon-like spice begins to weave through the peppery profile, adding an odd and slightly harsh wood note. This middle section of the Puro Nicaragua is where the robusto is at its most dynamic, with flavors seeming to shift between draws. One moment dry oak and black pepper dominate; the next, the minerality becomes more pronounced. Meanwhile, wet stone and a touch of salinity add texture to the smoke. Retrohales grow more expressive, bringing sharp white pepper, dry rawhide, and dusty cedar. Smoke density remains thick, and while the burn line becomes slightly wavy, it stays self-correcting. Strength edges upward toward medium/full but never overwhelms. Flavor intensity stays high and body remains firm at medium/full.

As I pop the band of the Knuckle Sandwich Puro Nicaragua, the cigar tightens its focus. Much of the sweetness from earlier disappears, replaced by a dense core of earth, charred wood, and potent pepper. The profile grows heavier, more serious, and more forceful. Earth notes take on a gritty texture, hitting with volcanic soil, damp hardwood, and roasted grain. A bittersweet chocolate note appears intermittently—dark and sharp—cutting through the heavier flavors and adding a welcome contrast. Some traces of molasses and toasted sugar return briefly, but they fade quickly beneath waves of pepper and wood.

Retrohales become increasingly intense, moving into deep white pepper and red pepper territory, with some black tea dryness on the finish. This is the cigar’s most aggressive stretch. Mouthfeel becomes drier, and the wood notes shift from cedar to walnut to pencil shavings, all while maintaining a peppery backbone. A touchup is required as the burn begins to drift; box-pressed cigars usually need small corrections near the end, and this one is no exception. The draw remains consistent from start to finish. Flavor holds steady at full, strength settles into medium/full, and body finishes at full. The final inch delivers a full-force expression of Nicaraguan tobacco—dry, spicy, bold, and unapologetic. The cigar’s earlier nuance and sweetness give way entirely to wood, earth, and pepper, ending in a very linear profile.

Would I Smoke This Cigar Again?

Eh, I’m not sure. I am a fan of the Knuckle Sandwich line, and I enjoy most of their offerings, but this is probably my second least favorite one in the bunch. It insists upon itself in a way that feels like it’s trying too hard to show that it’s a Nicaraguan puro. The pepper is overwhelming very early on, and the dry woodiness is only slightly balanced by the leather and occasional sweetness. This is a cigar best suited for smokers who appreciate leather-rich, pepper-driven cigars with a steady climb in intensity, and that is not me.

Knuckle Sandwich Puro Nicaragua Robusto

The Knuckle Sandwich Puro Nicaragua represents a clear, intentional shift for the brand—one that moves away from the flashier energy of earlier releases and toward a more focused exploration of Nicaraguan tobacco. The cigar’s darker presentation signals that change, and the smoking experience follows suit, highlighting dense pepper, charred wood, earth, and occasional flashes of sweetness without drifting far from the core identity Espinosa is known for. Rather than aiming for dramatic reinvention, the Puro narrows its scope and leans into straightforward intensity, offering a fiery profile that stays firmly rooted in Nicaraguan character… one that could perhaps benefit from a touch more sweetness and overall balance.
