Costa Rica Getting New Edición Regional This Month with El Rey del Mundo Tico

A new Edición Regional is coming to Costa Rica this month in celebration of the 15th anniversary of the distributor Cruz Canela & Trust G.B.

It’s the El Rey del Mundo Tico, a robusto extra that measures 5 9/10 (150mm) x 54 and is known as the Geniales vitola in Cuban cigar parlance. It’s a popular size for special releases, but is also used for the regular production Montecristo Open Eagle and Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan.

Pricing is set at $980 per box of 15 cigars, which works out to $65.33 per cigar. While the boxes for the cigars look very familiar, they get packaged in an attractive desktop humidor developed by HumidifGroup, making it a box within a box. Production is limited to 6,000 individually numbered boxes.

They will go on sale exclusively in Costa Rica on Sept. 28, with a launch party scheduled for Nov. 13 at TEK Cruz Canela in San José.

Additionally, 15 special “Master Piece” humidors will be released, each containing two boxes of cigars. Details and images of those humidors have not yet been released yet.

This is the third Edición Regional for Costa Rica, joining the Ramón Allones Nuevo Mundo that was released in 2017, and the Saint Luis Rey Pura Vida, released in 2020. The Nuevo Mundo was also a Geniales vitola, and while the Pura Vida was about an inch shorter, they both had a 54 ring gauge, meaning all three Edición Regional releases have the same thickness.

I strive to capture the essence of a cigar and the people behind them in my work – every cigar you light up is the culmination of the work of countless people and often represents generations of struggle and stories. For me, it’s about so much more than the cigar – it’s about the story behind it, the experience of enjoying the work of artisans and the way that a good cigar can bring people together. In addition to my work with halfwheel, I’m the public address announcer for the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training, as well as for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and the G-League’s Valley Suns. I was previously the PA announcer for the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League, and Goodyear Ballpark, spring training home of the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Guardians. I also work in a number of roles for Major League Baseball, plus I’m a voiceover artist. Prior to joining halfwheel, I covered the Phoenix and national cigar scene for Examiner.com, and was an editor for Cigar Snob magazine.
