Handling a cigar with a firm draw | JR Blending Room | Blending Room

May 14, 2025

When a cigar doesn’t draw easily, aficionados call it a firm draw. As long as it’s not completely plugged, you can usually still smoke it by drawing harder—and that’s where the term originates.

Even in the best-case scenario, a firm draw reduces the enjoyment of your smoke. In the worst cases, the cigar won’t stay lit, forcing you to reach for your cigar lighter repeatedly.

Buying top-quality cigars and storing them in a humidor can help avoid a firm draw. But you’re bound to come across this complaint at some point. So, what are the warning signs, and are there any solutions?

What causes a firm draw?

If your cigar won’t draw, there could be several reasons why. Resistance is one of the most significant signs of over-humidified cigars, especially if your cigar doesn’t stay lit.

You might notice a soft, spongy feel when holding the cigar—a clue that excess humidity has swollen the tobacco leaves. Cigar canoeing, a burn problem when smoking cigars, also suggests that your smoke has uneven humidity levels.

Tightly rolled cigars and knots in the tobacco can also create a firm draw, obstructing air passage through the bunch.

Finally, using the wrong tools to cut the cap off a cigar can pinch and flatten the tobacco, creating a plug and making the draw difficult.

Tightly rolled cigars

You shouldn’t have many complaints when smoking high-quality handmade cigars. However, resistance can occur if the torcedor rolls the tobacco leaves in the filler too tightly.

To smoke a cigar, you need to be able to draw air through it from the cherry and bring the smoke into your mouth. If the bunch is too tight, that can be harder.

How to fix a tightly rolled cigar

Hold the stick between your palms and gently roll it to loosen the folded leaves of the filler. Don’t apply too much pressure—you’re not trying to split the wrapper, but free up some air spaces inside the stick.

Plugged cigars

If your cigar won’t stay lit, something might be plugging it. This can happen when a twist or stem in the filler tobacco creates an air blockage.

Luckily, most plugs form near the cap. When you feel anything complicated at the cap end, you can resolve the problem by clipping more off.

How to fix a plugged cigar

To smoke a plugged cigar, you must create a tunnel for the air to pass through the blockage. The easiest way to do this is with a draw poker, which you use to pierce a hole down the center of the cigar from its head.

Over-humidified cigars

Resistance can suggest that a cigar is too humid. Extra moisture swells the tobacco leaves and prevents an easy draw. Avoid this problem with a professional humidor to keep your cigars fresh.

Check your humidifier settings if a cigar won’t draw fresh from the humidor. Ensure you’re measuring the humidity inside your humidor correctly. Remember, outside factors like the weather and temperature can affect the relative humidity in your humidor.

How to fix an over-humidified cigar

To fix an over-humidified cigar, reduce its humidity gradually. If you don’t want to change any settings on your main humidor, keep an empty wooden cigar box and learn how to “dry box” your cigars before smoking them.

Smoking complaints

When your mouth adds too much moisture, it can tighten a cigar’s draw. So, watch your smoking technique.

Your lips and tongue are moist. They touch the cigar while smoking, and this moisture can cause the tobacco to swell and plug the cigar.

How to avoid wetting your cigar

Try to minimize contact between the cigar and your lips. A good ashtray by your side means you can put your cigar down between draws.

If the draw is too tight and you think moisture is the problem, clip off the wet part with a straight cigar cutter. Then, try drawing again.

Improperly cut or lit cigars

Finally, be careful when cutting and lighting cigars. If you pinch the end, you will likely face a firmer draw. Likewise, if you don’t ignite the cherry evenly, you could encounter a firm draw, an uneven burn, or both.

How to cut and ignite a cigar

Cut your cigar with a cigar cutter, which clips the tobacco precisely. If you prefer a V-shaped or punch cutter, ensure you know how to use it, as there’s a greater chance of a firm draw when using these tools.

To ignite a cigar, hold it at an angle. Use the heat from a torch lighter but avoid touching the flame directly. Roll the cigar as you spark it to get an even burn.

You gain cigar skills with experience. However, you can learn the best cigar techniques now and why they matter.\
