Patina Cigars has announced the upcoming release of The Red Pill, a new core line that marks the company’s first box-pressed cigar. The cigars are expected to begin shipping to retailers within the next two weeks.
The Red Pill will be available in two box-pressed formats—a 5 x 54 and a 6 x 54—both packaged in boxes of 20 cigars. The blend features a Mexican San Andrés Oscuro wrapper, a Connecticut Broadleaf binder, and fillers from the U.S. and Nicaragua. The 5 x 54 carries an MSRP of $13, while the 6 x 54 is priced at $15.
According to Patina founder Mo Maali, The Red Pill represents the brand’s move toward a fuller-bodied profile within the Patina portfolio. “The box press is an homage to the Max Press cigar that my buddy Drew Brandt and I did almost 10 years ago for the Sultans of Smoke Podcast,” Maali said. “The Red Pill is a continuation of building the fuller end of the Patina portfolio.”
The name itself draws inspiration from Maali’s personal experiences during the 2009 Global Financial Crisis, when he worked with the FDIC to help close banks across the U.S. “A ‘red pill’ is an awakening to a truth that causes one to examine their understanding of reality,” Maali explained. “That period greatly shaped my understanding about how the global financial system works and some of the malevolent issues that are inherently embedded within it.”
