On Thursday, Oct. 16, the Tiburon Town Council gave its initial, unanimous approval to a proposed ordinance that would ban the sale of all tobacco and nicotine products in the city.
According to a report from KTVU, the idea for the ban came from high school students in the area, who said that vaping had become a significant issue at their high school. Mayor Holli Thier said that youth in Marin County, which Tiburon is a part of, vape at a rate twice that of the average in California.
Additionally, there are currently no tobacco retailers in the town, which is located approximately 15 miles north of San Francisco.
The ordinance must still go through a second reading and a vote in November, and if approved at that time, it would go into effect in December. If it goes into effect, Tiburon would join Beverly Hills and Manhattan Beach in completely banning the sale of tobacco products. In the case of Beverly Hills, however, sales at cigar lounges remain legal. The town of Ross, also in Marin County, is scheduled to take up a similar proposal next month, while Belvedere and Corte Madera are reportedly looking at similar options.
Tiburon is home to approximately 9,000 residents.
