Caldwell Cigar Co. is getting ready to ship a new core line, and the name will sound familiar to fans of the company’s earlier work. Caldwell The Queen is Dead opens for shop pre-orders on Monday, October 19, with shipments expected to go out at the end of October.
It’s a first for Caldwell in its current form. According to Andrew Wike, Vice President of Marketing, The Queen is Dead is the first new core line the company has built from scratch as Laudisi/Caldwell, and work on the blend began shortly after the two companies merged.
Robert Caldwell developed the blend with William Ventura, and the cigars are rolled at Tabacalera William Ventura. It uses a Habano 2000 (Habano Dos Mil) wrapper over a Sumatra binder, with Dominican Corojo, Habano, and Criollo in the filler. Caldwell rates it medium in body and lists toast and white pepper up front, followed by nutty sweetness as the pepper builds and a touch of cinnamon on the finish.
“This is the stick I have been most excited for since we dropped the original Long Live the Queen a few years back. QID is a very well-balanced, medium-bodied cigar. I find it to be in almost perfect harmony. It has just the right amount of everything that I like, and all of it plays together very well. I’ve been playing with this blend for a while. We made it together with William Ventura; he is my go-to for my favorite blends. This beauty has a H2000 wrapper over a Sumatran binder and Dominican entrails. If you like LLTQ and Anastasia, then The Queen is Dead will fit right into your wheelhouse,” said Robert Caldwell.
The band carries a painted portrait of a queen in a feathered headdress, keeping with Caldwell’s habit of commissioning artists for its packaging. The line launches in five sizes, each with its own name, and every size comes in 24-count boxes. Suggested retail pricing runs from $13.75 to $16.00 per cigar:
- Requiem (Robusto): 5″ x 50, $14.50
- Scarlet Thread (Corona): 5¾” x 44, $13.75
- Crimson Veil (Toro): 6″ x 52, $15.50
- Bloodroot (Lancero): 7¾” x 40, $15.00
- Revenant (Magnum): 6″ x 60, $16.00
Caldwell says it’ll share exact ship dates closer to release.
